Hypnotherapy might not be the first thing you would think of in relation to goal setting, but there are ways in which it can be a useful adjunct to other methods you are using.

Setting Goals
Goals give us something to work towards. Progressing towards goals and achieving them brings us rewarding feelings. We can set goals in any and all areas of our lives. Research has shown that those who write their goals down are more likely to achieve them. In fact, the act of writing down your goals for all areas of your life can be a very inspiring one. Getting very clear about what you really want can give you real direction. This is the most important aspect. Write down as much detail as you can about each of your specific goals.

You should also make sure that each of your goals is something you really want. This may sound obvious, but the truth is that many people aspire to others' goals for them, or to things they think they should want. It is very difficult to achieve something if your heart is not truly in it. Nor does the achieving of it bring any true pleasure. It is also a good idea to ensure that your goals are aligned with your values. Once you have your goals written down, what steps will you need to take to achieve them? Breaking down your goals in this way creates smaller goals with which to work the achievement of which will give you positive feedback and a sense that you are truly moving forward. By now, you will probably have many goals on your list which you will need to prioritise. Trying to work on them all at the same time will only overwhelm you.

Visualisation
This is a technique known to many and is commonly used in hypnotherapy. There are a number of benefits to visualising your goals. By creating a picture of your goal using as many of your senses as you can, you further clarify it. Sometimes as you visualise in this way, your mind suggests a few more pleasing features. Thus as you practise, your goal may become more complete and more attractive to you.

Visualisation is making use of your natural ability to create what you want in life. As you go about your daily business, you already use your imagination. Anything you create you already see in your mind's eye even if it is only a fleeting or vague impression. As you visualise your goals, you create an impression on your mind that can keep you moving towards fruition.

What Is Holding You Back?
As you work towards your goals, particularly if you are visualising them, you may become aware of self-sabotaging behaviours or fears that are holding you back. This is where hypnotherapy can further help you achieve your goals. Fears and blocks can slow you down and even prevent you achieving your goals. Each of us has a set of beliefs some of which we may not even be consciously aware of. We will have developed these as a result of what we have been told about ourselves as we were growing up, the way we saw parents and authority figures deal with life and through our own life experience. Hypnotherapy can provide one of the quickest means of resolving these so that you can move forward unhampered.

So a visit to a hypnotherapist can really help you move towards your goals. If there's something you really want to do, don't let anything hold you back. Learn some useful techniques, and resolve any obstacles with hypnotherapy.
